François de Gaulle was born in 1889, the younger brother of Charles. He entered the French Navy in 1909 and rose through the ranks quickly. By the outbreak of World War II, he was a captain and the commander of the destroyer "Le Terrible."

When France fell to the Nazis in 1940, François de Gaulle refused to accept defeat. He sailed his ship to England and joined the Free French Forces. He was soon promoted to admiral and given command of the French naval forces in the Mediterranean Sea.

François de Gaulle's naval forces played a vital role in the Allied invasion of North Africa in 1942. He also led the naval assault on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day in 1944.

After the war, François de Gaulle served as the Chief of the French Navy from 1946 to 1951. He retired from the Navy in 1953 and died in 1964.
