The Origins Of Halloween

The roots of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which was celebrated on November 1st. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred, and the spirits of the deceased returned to earth. To ward off these spirits, the Celts would light bonfires, wear costumes, and offer food and drink to the spirits.

When the Romans conquered the Celts, they adopted some of their customs, including the celebration of Samhain. The Romans renamed the festival "All Saints' Day," and it became a Christian holiday. However, many of the pagan traditions associated with Samhain continued to be practiced, and over time, the two holidays became intertwined, giving rise to the modern-day Halloween.

Trick-or-treating: Children dress up in costumes and go door-to-door asking for candy. This tradition is thought to have originated from the Celtic practice of leaving food and drink out for the spirits of the dead.
